Discussion:
Making Eudora the default e-mail client
(too old to reply)

When I create a new personality in Eudora 6.2.1.2 (running windows
XP), the first thing I get is a window message, with the header
"Microsoft Outlook" saying:

There is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot
fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set
it as the default mail client.

I've only received this message since installing Eudora on a different
hard drive that I had before, so I suspect the new installation is not
set as the default e-mail client. I uninstalled the old one and set
Eudora as the default in the Control Panel under Internet Options, but
I still get this message.
How does one make Eudora the default mail client?

UNcheck Tools -> Options -> Extra warnings -> Start Eudora and it's not
the default mailer.

Close Eudora and reopen it. You will be asked to make Eudora the
default mailer.

Nope. Didn't work. Even re-started the computer.
It's no big deal. I've got my personalities pretty much set up at
this point. If I add any more, I can live with that message, even if
it does suggest using Outlook (yecccch!).
Thanks.

Of course it didn't work. It should have been "Check" and not
"Uncheck".
Sorry, brain fart :(

I tried it both ways. Still didn't work. I tried out a
spam-blocking service, SpamAssault (NOT as good as Eudora) which had
the option of viewing a blocked message in one's e-mail client. I
configured it to work with Eudora and gave its location in the
process, but it would still open Outlook Express if I chose that
option.

OK, I think I found the answer myself. I opened Outlook (something
I never do) and it asked me if I wanted to make it my default mail
client. I chose "No" of course. Now I no longer get that message in
Eudora.

OK, I have a related but reverse problem. On my work machine (XP SP2, Office
2K3, Eudora Pro 6.2.1.2) I need to have Outlook as the default email client,
for various reasons (certain Sharepoint Teamservices functions require it).
I've got Outlook configured to ask if it's not the default, which it does,
and I say yes, and Eudora does NOT have itself set to ask if IT'S not the
default. Problem is that sometimes Outlook is in fact the default, sometimes
Eudora is, and I'll be darned if I can figger out why they don't stick as
set. Any ideas?

TIA

Eudora has a setting that tells it to just set itself as the default
without asking. When the warning about Eudora not being the default mailer
comes up, there's a check box for not asking about that again. If you
check that and tell Eudora to set itself as the default, you'll end up
with Eudora automatically setting itself as the default when it starts.
IIRC, the setting involved is DefaultMailto=1. Check to make sure you
don't have that setting in eudora.ini.

Hmm, I did indeed have that exact setting, but do not have the warning box
asking if it's the default set. For a test, closed Eudora, then made sure
that Outlook was in fact the default by closing it (it has its check set to
ask) then said yes when it asked if it was the default when it started. I
then changed the ini line DefaultMailto to 0. I tried replying to a message
from Outlook Express, and Eudora started up anyway. I then removed the line
completely but it still starts Eudora (of course I closed Eudora each time
in between the changes). Outlook was up the entire time. Did I test this
correctly or did I miss something??

Thanks, Katrina!

Do you have tools | options | extra warning | start Eudora and its not the
default mailer checked or not? If that's not checked, you're not going to
get the warning box, whether or not you've told Eudora to make itself the
default mailer. If it isn't checked, Eudora will act according to the
setting for whether it should make itself the default without asking.

Did you start Eudora at all after telling Outlook to make itself the
default mailer? If not, then the problem isn't with Eudora, at least not
totally. Eudora can't make itself the default if it hasn't been run. If
you didn't run it, apparently something is going wrong when you tell
Outlook to make itself the default.

Try telling Outlook to make itself the default again. Then go to the
Internet settings, either from the control panel or from within IE and see
if it is listed as the default there. If it isn't, then there is
definitely a problem with it not getting made the default to start with.
If it is, reboot the computer, then check it again, then check to see
which starts when you click on a mailto: link.

You may have missed the setting about whether or not Eudora should ask
about making itself the default mailer, and maybe you should have rebooted
Windows after changing the default. Windows is sometimes flaky about that,
although it shouldn't have needed a reboot to change it. It sounds to me
like something is going wrong rather than you missing a setting in Eudora
though, or possibly that something else is interfering. Interference could
be coming from a security program of some sort. Some of the programs
designed to stop malicious software from making use of the internet will
stop programs from making changes to various settings that have to do with
the internet, possibly including the default mailer. (I've had run-ins
with programs that didn't want to allow the default browser or the home
page in the browser to be changed. I haven't come across any problem with
the default e-mail client, but I have no problem believing that those
same programs might cause a problem with it too.)

Set everybody to warn if its' not the default (browser/mailer).
Then close all & re?boot?..
As each asks, set them to THE WAY YOU WANT rather then the way THEY
want.
This fixed my problem w/ Eudora going to ie.
