eudora is unable to update the system registry

recently for some reason i get a message that begins "eudora was
unable to update the system registry" when i start it. i have using
windows 7 right clicked properties and gone to advanced and have
clicked the box saying "run as administrator" but this has not helped.

any ideas how to get rid of this message? tia....

I had a crash. I copied the Eudora folder from a bac kup. Eudora would
indeed start without installing, but then gave the message the OP
mentioned. Installing Eudora 7.1.0.9 over this copied set of files and
folders got rid of the OP's message.

I was also having this problem. I saw another post that recommended a fix so I tried it:

- Right click the Eudora 7.1.0.9 icon on your Win7 desktop
- Click "Run As Administrator"
- A new instance of the client will open. Enter your registration code in Help, Payment & Registration.
- Close the client
- The next time I opened the client, the message was gone.

Worked for me!

Running an application "as administrator" is not recommended. I haven't had
this problem running under Win8, but if I did, I think I would be more
inclined to follow Dennis Bieber's advice.

It's not what I recommend, this is what many others who understand this stuff say;. I believe it has to do with the extent of damage an app with admin privileges can do compared to not having admin privileges.

Go to properties.
click advanced.
check box run as an administrator.

Besides being a response to a five month old post, that is not the
recommended action.

Win7 and later changed the layout of the registry, and put some parts
under system protection. Eudora is trying to change entries that are now
protected.

The preferred solution is to A) turn off the Eudora features that try
to change registry; B) use the Windows "set default programs" feature to
enable/disable whatever Eudora is trying to change.


First look at Tools/Options/Extra Warnings and turn off the "Start
Eudora and it's not the default mailer".

Then look at is Eudora Tools/Options/MAPI -- Set the first radio group
to NEVER. If the middle option is checked, Eudora tries to replace the
system MAPI DLL with its own DLL on start-up, and reverse that on exit. One
should probably manually make a one-time replacement of the system MAPI DLL
(save the system one with a new extension so it can be restored later).
ALWAYS might work if first run as admin (and then ensure the option is in
the eudora.ini of all users). Note that DLLs are in protected space --
which is why ALWAY might work if done as admin.

Last, look at the Automation group -- it is possible that this too
affects the registry. I've never used the automation feature.


It works -- no need to run as administrator (which is dangerous as it
could mean that launching attachments inherits the admin privilege, and
that leads to letting malware run in elevated privileges.

With regards to gmail -- the easiest solution is to... NOT USE GMAIL.
Eudora is too old to automatically update certificates, and Google has a
tendency to change gmail server certificates every few weeks (whereas most
servers go one to two years before generating a new certificate).

For Eudora, you have to fight with the manual procedure of approving an
unknown certificate, retrying, etc. until you get rid of all the skulls (or
whatever Eudora marks bad certificates with).

2. Have you actually downloaded sTunnel and read its guide to
implementing? Or is that asking a lot?

3. (Since what I wrote was hearsay from the ListMoms Eudora mailing list
- all of it very positive) you could join that ListMoms list and get
more advice than you ever thought possible.

I'll watch out for your response in November.

I read on a web page this is about MS locking the registry entry for the default email application. I didn't bother reading how to fix this, but I'm sure it requires using regedit to unlock those fields.

M$ didn't just "lock" the entry... They MOVED it to a different
location. Eudora is trying to change an entry in the old location (which is
now a system protected area, just like user data isn't allowed in "Program
Files"), and doesn't have any effect; the next time it starts it "gets" the
system default settings and sees they don't match what it was expecting.

The solution is to

1) use the Windows controls to set default applications (in Win10,
<right-click>Start, Apps and Features, Default apps); You might need to do
this both as User and as Admin.

2) TURN OFF any options inside Eudora that try to change system settings
(no check for non-default app, don't use Eudora MAPI, maybe a few others).

I have opened it once as Administrator, after I got the message. As admin the message didn't come up. Next time started it as normal, also no message anymore. I noticed, when you try to change the default mail application in Windows 10, Eudora is not listed and cannot be searched for. I don't know how to cure that, but at least the message has gone.

(Qualcomm) Eudora shows up as an option for "Default apps" / "Email" on
my Win10 system, as does Forte Agent. What doesn't show is Pandora -- an
guessing the author of that hasn't figured out how to have the installer
register it as a mail client. For Eudora -- I thought installing the
program (on a fresh OS) while in admin mode provided the registration
needed for it to show as an option in default apps config.
