Hello,

I was surprised and happy to find this group, because I assumed that every other Eudora user had switched to some other program by now.

The reason I'm here is because Eudora (7.1.0.9) stalls when I try to download my email, and I get "ERR Message 10157 expunged."

I tried to find out what that meant and how to fix it, but I didn't find either of those things on Google. So I'm hoping someone here can tell me what it means and how to fix it.

Thanks very much in advance for any info anyone can give me.

The first thing you need to do is to download and install the Hermes update for Eudora.
This allows Eudora to communicate with servers using a higher lever of SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). Most servers now require a higher level than 1.0, which is all that Eudora supports. Hermes extends that to version 1.2.
Download the files from here.
https://sourceforge.net/projects/hermesmail/files/HermSSL.zip/download
Unzip the files and place the files from the HermSSL folder (assuming you're on Windows) into Eudora's program files folder, replacing the originals.
Then run the vcredist.exe file to update some necessary files on Windows, if needed. If there is an error message, it means they're already installed, so just dismiss it. Hopefully this will enable you to connect again.
HTH. Cheers, Dave.

Dave,

Thanks very much for posting that info, as I thought I was going to be forced to get a new email program. I downloaded Hermes and unzipped it into a subfolder named Hermes I created in my Eudora folder

So I now have the following files in that folder:
.DS_Store
contents.txt
Iibeay32.dll
license.ssl
QCSSL.dll
readme.ssl
readme.txt
rootcerts.p7b
ssleay32.dll
vcredist.exe

Can I run vcredist.exe from that subfolder, or do I have to cut and paste those files into the master Eudora folder. As far as i can tell, that folder doesn't have any files with those names. So I'm not sure what you mean when you wrote "replacing the originals."

Thanks very much in advance for the advice.

Some of those files are not necessary for Hermes to operate, but the ones you do need are libeay32.dll, QCSSL.dll, rootcerts.p7b, and ssleay32.dll.
All of those should be in your Eudora program files folder, and need to be replaced with the Hermes versions.
vcredist.exe can be run from anywhere. You probably already have it installed, but it is needed for the Hermes files to work, so run it to check.
If you get an error message, you already have it, so just dismiss it.
