When I try to start Eudora 6.1.2(6.1.1 or 6.1.2 both do the same)
I get:

"Eudora out of date Table of Contents"

Whether I <rebuild> <use old> or <cancel>

I get:

Eudora
"Could not open file for writing
Cause: no such file or directory exist. (2)"

Then I get:
"An unhandled exception has occured in Eudora

Information is being written to the exception.log"

I'm using:
Winxp pro sp1
Avg v7.0.253
Eudora 6.1.2 Paid
xp's firewall is on

I've been using eudora eversince I've been on the internet (I think
about 10 years)
and this is the first problem I've ever had.

I tried all the ususal stuff that normally bails me out, went back to
restore points before any security updates etc (you know the drill),
but nothing works.

I have not done a clean reinstall of Eudora (hoping to avoid that).

The not good thing I do is I have about 10meg in the "IN Box" with
about 700 messages ..I have been doing this a very long time..(what I
do is I clean out the in box at around 1000 messages.)

Any help you could give me would be GREATLY appreciated.

Have you compacted your mailboxes lately?

Try:
If your mailbox files are on a network, look into the following setting
in the EUDORA.INI file uder [Settings]:
TocDateLeeway 2 Number of seconds that the date on
a mailbox .TOC file can be behind
the .MBX file that Eudora will not flag
as being out of date. Helpful for
network file systems.

Increase this value until the problem goes away.

The default TocDateLeeway for Eudora 3.x and previous versions is 2
The default TocDateLeeway for Eudora 4.x and higher versions is 10.

Daniel,

I'm not on a network (this is my personal home system) and those
leeway etc. settings are not in the Eudora.ini file.

I do compact my mailboxes regularly (normally everytime I check
email), but unfortunately now Eudora bombs off before I can do that.

I'm getting very close to a reinstall. Since I do have a couple of
recent backups and the loss will not be too great. Right now I have
no confidence a reinstall will fix the problem.

Thanks very much for your help,
Scott

If any Settings is not in your Eudora.ini, then the default value
is used. You may need to raise your default values. So you
have to added then to the Eudora.ini file with the higher value.

There's no file name mentioned in that error? Access violation errors can
result from permissions problems in WinXP. If you have the computer set up
with multiple user IDs, is there any chance that you ran Eudora using a
different user ID before this problem came up? Messages about not being
able to write to files can also result from directory or file structure
problems. Have you run a disk-checking utility since this first happened?
If you haven't, doing so would be a good idea.
Post by Scott Campbell
I have not done a clean reinstall of Eudora (hoping to avoid that).
That's not likely to help. The problem is most likely to be with your data
files, not with the program files. Reinstalling doesn't change your data
files. You can choose to use a new data directory, but you can choose to
do that without reinstalling too.

That's bad. That may be the reason you're having problems.

I have been doing this a very long time..(what I
do is I clean out the in box at around 1000 messages.)
You're waiting until you have 10 times the recommended limit before
cleaning it out.

This is telling you that in.mbx was timestamped after in.toc.

My recommendation is for you to run a disk checking utility first. If that
doesn't find and fix a problem that is causing Eudora to have trouble
writing to its files, rename in.mbx and in.toc to something like OldIn.mbx
and OldIn.toc. That should let you open Eudora and download new messages
without having to open the mailbox that is giving you trouble now. See if
you can open the newly renamed mailbox. If you can, it is most likely that
the size of the inbox was the only cause of your problem. If you can't, it
is still not unlikely that the size of the inbox was your problem, but the
inbox may have actually gotten damaged while this was going on.

In the future, just don't use the inbox or the outbox as storage places
for messages. If you want to read all new messages in a single mailbox,
make another mailbox for that purpose and filter the messages you've been
leaving in the inbox to that mailbox.
