Increase number of characters in subject line

I use Eudora 7.1.0.9, and I would like to make Eudora increase the number of characters displayed in the "subject line" column. There is space for it on my screen, but right now the displayed subject line cuts off after about 60-70 characters.

Does anyone know of any fix for this?

I see what you mean. I usually use Eudora in "Restore" size which doesn't provide enough room for that many characters. But when I maximize Eudora the subject line area is much bigger yet a long subject is cut off.

Don't know what can be done about it. Have you checked all the configuration options in the eudora.ini file? Documentation is available somewhere, but don't ask me where.

Just out of curiosity, if you look at the raw message headers, are
these cut-off subject lines ones that break in the headers and are
continued on a second line? And if they are, is the visible truncation a
match for the header line breaks?

Remember -- the limit in original email specification was for 80
character lines, and many headers still fit into that limitation, using the
RFC specification for how to indicate a continuation line (typically,
continuations are indented). Eudora could be just using the first line of
header for display.

Which "original email specification"?

RFC 822 I should imagine. Or better RFC 2822 which supersedes it. Look
at section 2.1.1 Line Length Limits.

That's what you'd expect: the Mother of All Mail RFC's.
But it never specified anything about line length, other
than "common interpretation" in par. 3.4.8 (folding long
header fields):
'"Long" is commonly interpreted to mean greater than 65 or
72 characters. The former length serves as a limit, when
the message is to be viewed on most simple terminals which
use simple display software; however, the limit is not
imposed by this standard.'

Line Length Limits.
RFC 2822 is *17* years younger than RFC 822, and thus can't
be considered the "original mail specification".

But we could go further back in time:
'The standard receiving mail printer for mail box number 0 is
assumed to have a print line 72 characters wide, and a page
of 66 lines.'
(RFC 196)

No fix that I'm aware of, and probably none possible.

Blue-skying a bit here...

Since the displayed subject seems to be contained in the .TOC file, I
bet the structure of the TOC file is hard coded into Eudora.exe or
Eudora.dll (or whatever) and would be exceedingly difficult, if not
impossible, to modify.

I sure wish it could because sorting by subject, then date, winds up
with messages with the same subject being out of date order when the
"Re:" in a reply causes characters to be truncated off the end of the
subject... because the sort is done on the truncated subject line
found in the TOC file, not on the full "Subject:" field in the message
headers. I see and appreciate the reason for this - to increase
search/sort speed - but it would be nice if the TOC could handle more
characters for the subject.

*IF* the length of the subject as contained in the TOC is defined by a
special terminating character at the end of the subject, maybe there
are a few bytes in Eudora.exe or Eudora.dll that could be changed to
lengthen it, but I suspect the whole TOC structure is hard coded.

I posted your question to Eudora Web List and here is what I got back:

I'm pretty sure the OP was asking if there was any way to increase the
number of characters viewable as "Subject" in the "In" box,

Like I said above in my earlier message, there is no way to change
that. If he wants to see more, he needs to look at the actual subject
header, not the mailbox table of contents.

If you would like to subscribe to this group, (I highly recommend it
if you are using Eudora as the person who know absolutely everything
about Eudora is the resident expert there) just: send an e-mail to
<mailto:join-eudora-***@hades.listmoms.net?Subject=Gazelle>; be sure
to start the Subject line with the word "Gazelle" (no quotes). That's
it. They will send a confirmation back to you. Just read and follow
the guidelines. No gimmicks; just great info.
