Discussion:
Eudora POP account setup issues
(too old to reply)

I am setting up a new Gmail account and want to use it as a POP mailbox with Eudora. I followed the instructions on the Gmail help page for this and it times out without making a connection. Not sure what to try.

I've enabled POP in Gmail.

The Gmail suggested settings include:

Incoming Mail (POP) Server pop.gmail.com
Requires SSL: Yes
Port: 995

I've tried all the settings for SSL. When I set it for "required, alternate port" it says, "Logging into POP Server" and hangs until it times out. It can't be killed before the timeout. lol

Any suggestions?

Don't try to set the port in Eudora's options.
When you choose Required alternate port Eudora will use that port. If
you have done the change in the options of Eudora you should undo that
change.

You also have to go into Gmail to permit it to use "less secure"
settings" Less secure means using any email client that is not gmail.

Thank you for your reply. I changed the setting in Gmail to "less secure". I don't understand exactly what you mean about not changing Eudora "options". If you mean manually editing the .ini file, I didn't do that. I created a persona and manually set the properties.

Now when I try to check mail I get the same results for every Secure Sockets setting other than, Required, Alternate Port. Then I gives me an error "The server's SSL certificate was rejected...". It asks if I want to trust the certificate in future sessions and it doesn't matter how I respond, yes or no, it continues to give the same error.

I also clicked on Last SSL Info and in the new dialog for the Certificate Information Manager I clicked Add to Trusted. This also did not fix the problem.

I read the first couple of posts in the thread "Eudora 7.1: why do I have this strange problem with Certificate?" and digging into the certificate list as described fixed the problem. I seem to be able to get the email now.

There is a category "Ports" in Tools > Options. It is enabled by
moving esoteric.epi from the extrastuff subdirectory one level up to
the main directory. Doing that adds 6 more categories to the end of
the Options. Changing the ports there worked fine when people had
just one personality, but doing it now is not recommended.

I am glad that you finally succeeded in fixing the problem. (The
solution for the certificate problem has been posted here innumerable
times since April 2014) Now, for the bad news, Google changes the
certificates a couple of times per month so you will have more work
ahead of you.
However, you can avoid that by install Stunnel to do it for you, or
you can install the new dll files that have been published by the new
Hermes project.

Pardon me for jumping in here, but I wanted to say that I HAVE
installed the new dll files and I still get the occasional certificate
error, both inbound and outbound. Most of the time on the inbound ones
just clicking "Yes" on the pop-up works; not always. On the outbound
ones I always have to do the "certificate dance" and drill down to
find the skull.

I don't use, nor do I get much mail from gmail.

In addition to the dlls you need Microsoft Visual C++ 2015

In addition to the dlls you need Microsoft Visual C++ 2015
Redistributable (x86) installed on your computer. Do you have that?
Yes, I installed the whole package when Nick posted it.
.... not sure that the VC redistributable was actually provided with
Nick's package. In any event you need the 2015 32-bit version installed
even if your Windows installation is 64-bit. Worth specifically checking.
