Discussion:
messages going to Trash automatically?

Eudora 7.0.1.0 in Paid Mode.

I have NO filters defined in Eudora, yet every once in a while, an incoming
message will go straight to the Trash folder as soon as it's downloaded. I
spot this because the Trash folder name turns bold in the directory
display.

I'm assuming that it's a malfunctioning SpamWatch issue, but is there a way
to be sure? Has anyone else encountered this?

You've double-checked to make sure there really aren't any filters? Are
you also sure that the messages in question are really being downloaded at
that time? If you haven't made sure of that, it may be that the messages
are being sent to the trash prior to that and the mailbox status just
isn't getting updated until then.

Automatic junking has no capability of sending messages anywhere other
than Junk. Are the messages in question actually junk?

If you have Eudora set to trim junk after a certain number of days, it may
be that the messages are being sent to the Trash because they've reached
the specified number of days in age and are thus being deleted.

I've seen other people complain of similar things, but I've never come
across someone whose messages were actually being sent to the trash that
way. There just really isn't any mechanism through which that could be
happening. Almost everyone who complains about it actually has a filter
doing it. In your case, I'm inclined to suspect Junk trimming though.

I routinely check the Trash before I close Eudora, since I have it set to
automatically empty Trash when closing. The messages are definitely being
downloaded at the same time I notice the "Trash" mailbox name turn bold.

In most cases, yes. Once in a while I'll find a message there which
actually is from my service provider or cell provider alerting me to the
fact that the current month's bill is ready for viewing.

Hmm. I just checked, and for some reason I've set junk to be purged after
only one day. I can't say for certain that these messages have not been
transferred from Junk. I did that because I didn't want my Junk folder
keeping many messages lying around.

You may be right. I hadn't actually thought of that possibility. The Junk
folder name doesn't turn bold when it gets a new message. I think that's a
configurable setting too, isn't it?

So they're either junk, or something that Eudora might easily mistake for
junk.

Mail checks can trigger junk trimming, so that may be why you see the
messages in Trash after doing a mail check.

If you want to verify that your mysteriously trashed messages are actually
trimmed junk, try setting Eudora to trim to a different mailbox. Just make
a new mailbox for that purpose and change the setting for trimming at
Tools | options | Junk mail extras. (If you set it to trim to a mailbox
that doesn't exist, that will totally delete the messages. That can be
desirable, but for this purpose it isn't.)

Yes. That setting is Tools | options | junk mail | junk is never marked
unread.
