Eudora 7.1 (7.1.0.9) has become "Temporarily Unavailable for Download"
at http://www.eudora.com/download/
(i.e. the download link has been removed,
and has been replaced with that message)

Version 7.0 has also been removed from "Old Eudora Installers"
http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2350hq.html

I suppose this might inspire some speculation,
as to whether Qualcomm contemplates either an update
(to fix something?) or a downgrade (to remove something?);
meanwhile, anyone interested might wish to download backups
for whatever version(s) they might ever need to reinstall,
from wherever you can get them.

What about Odysseus now? I paid, downloaded just now, but it seems to
really lack in functionalities. Too lazy to peruse all the forums ...

I'm too lazy to give you a personal summary.

If you look elsewhere for the original Eudora 7.1.0.9 installer,
it might be useful to make sure that it is unmodified,
without malware.

The CRC-32, MD5 and SHA-1 checksums of my saved copy are:

04e7a8aa [checksum used by "zip"] Eudora_7.1.0.9.exe
8be29cc1e00a67b87a3d31583d46fd26 Eudora_7.1.0.9.exe
c5bf63ea54f7acd9f89a1ecf104636e8ecbb9438 Eudora_7.1.0.9.exe

(others should check these and post whether they confirm)

A fairly easy way to display these file checksums, as well as
vastly more useful information about any file in Windows,
is to install FileAlyzer by Patrick M. Kolla
(author of "Spybot Search & Destroy")

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/filealyzer/
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
This download page itself supplies file checksums,
as do many other (though not all) software sources.

Another, independent checksum verifier:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Md5deep [includes SHA-1 and others]
http://md5deep.sourceforge.net/

CRC-32 is quite insecure (easy to duplicate in a forged file);
MD5 (128 bits) and SHA-1 (160 bits) are considered difficult
to forge, and to forge both at the same time is more than unlikely :)

Try http://www.filewatcher.com/m/Eudora_7.1.0.9.exe.17416184.0.0.html
I tried two of them, out of curiosity, and those two
(including university ftp.fh-brandenburg.de )
were correct images of Windows installer Eudora_7.1.0.9.exe
as verified by secure MD5 and SHA-1 hashes
(and file length 17,416,184 as is part of above URL)

Eudora 7.1 (7.1.0.9) has become "Temporarily Unavailable for Download"
at http://www.eudora.com/download/
(i.e. the download link has been removed,
and has been replaced with that message)
Version 7.0 has also been removed from "Old Eudora Installers"
http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2350hq.html
I suppose this might inspire some speculation,
as to whether Qualcomm contemplates either an update
(to fix something?) or a downgrade (to remove something?)
Speculation is over -- the version 7.1.0.9 installer is back
(but altered), and the version 7.0 installer is not.

Comparing two completely "clean" installations,
"Eudora7a" (original 7.1.0.9) and "Eudora7b" ("new" 7.1.0.9)
these are the only differences:

.\qckstart.pdf different (C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora7b is more recent)
.\x1lib.dll only in C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora7a

So the run-time library for "X1" has been deleted
(you will still see the options in the GUI, but it won't run).

"X1" is the "Paid" mode feature for an alternate, "Ultra fast search"
(at the expense of ultra long indexing in advance),
which is actually a product of http://www.x1.com

It was once indicated that Qualcomm would have owed continuing royalties
to that company for any continuing "Paid" mode distribution of that library,
which was cited by Matt D. as one reason why Qualcomm
could not offer a final-version registration code for "Paid" mode,
as it did for versions up to 5.2.x (not that they will do so now,
but apparently some liability for continued distribution
of the run-time library may be eliminated by no longer including it).

If you use "X1" then be sure to save your original installer
(unless one can manage to run everything without having
ever run the installer, just by executing the program files,
as from a USB stick -- has anyone checked
whether this works, including even this feature?).
